User Guide
Enter Bill Amount
Enter the total bill amount in the "Bill Amount" field. The dollar sign ($) is displayed as a prefix. You can enter any amount with up to two decimal places. The calculator will instantly update all results as you type.
Select Tip Percentage
Choose from five preset tip percentages: 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%. The selected percentage is highlighted in green. You can also enter a custom percentage in the "Custom %" field -- it supports up to one decimal place (e.g., 17.5%).
Switch to Direct Tip Amount
Click the "Enter amount" button at the top right of the tip section to switch to direct tip amount input mode. Enter the tip amount directly in dollars. When there are multiple people, you can toggle between "Total Tip" and "Per Person Tip" to specify whether the amount is for the whole group or per individual. The equivalent tip percentage is shown below the input.
Split the Bill
Use the - and + buttons to set the number of people sharing the bill (1 to 50). When more than one person is selected, the main display switches to "Total / Person" and additional breakdown rows appear showing "Tip / Person" and "Bill / Person".
Round Up Tip
Toggle the "Round up tip to whole number" switch to round the tip amount up to the nearest whole dollar. This is useful when you prefer to leave a clean, round tip. The quick comparison table also updates to reflect rounded values.
Quick Comparison Table
When a bill amount is entered, a comparison table appears showing the tip and total for all five preset percentages side by side. Click any row to instantly apply that tip percentage. The currently active percentage is highlighted in green.
FAQ
Q: How is the tip calculated?
A: The tip is calculated as: Tip Amount = Bill Amount × Tip Percentage ÷ 100. For example, a $50.00 bill with an 18% tip gives $50.00 × 0.18 = $9.00 tip, and a $59.00 total. If "Round up" is enabled, the tip is rounded up to the nearest whole dollar.
Q: How does bill splitting work?
A: When you set the number of people to more than 1, the calculator divides both the tip and the total equally among all people. Tip per person = Total Tip ÷ Number of People. Total per person = (Bill + Total Tip) ÷ Number of People. Each person's share is shown in the results panel.
Q: What is the difference between "Total Tip" and "Per Person Tip" in amount mode?
A: When you switch to direct tip amount input and there are multiple people, you can choose whether the amount you enter represents the total tip for the whole group ("Total Tip") or the tip each individual will pay ("Per Person Tip"). Selecting "Per Person Tip" multiplies your input by the number of people to get the total tip.
Q: Are my preferences saved?
A: Yes. Your tip percentage, number of people, round-up setting, and input mode are automatically saved to your browser's localStorage. They will be restored the next time you open the calculator. The bill amount is not saved for privacy reasons.
Q: What tip percentage should I leave?
A: Tipping customs vary by country and service type. In the United States, 15-20% is standard for restaurant service, with 18-20% being common for good service and 20-25% for exceptional service. For counter service or takeout, 10-15% is typical. Always consider the quality of service and local customs when deciding.
Q: Does the calculator work offline?
A: Yes. All calculations are performed entirely in your browser with no server requests. The calculator works fully offline once the page has loaded.
